Veterans' Day Program
November 11th, 2008
The Social Studies Department is an avenue of patriotism at Lakeside Middle School. Each year the Social Studies Department sponsors a program to honor American Veterans on Veterans' Day. The program, initiated in 1993, continues until the present with Lakeside’s entire student body, faculty, and staff taking part.
The idea for a Veterans Day program originated with former principal, Don Saxon, in 1993. He purchased small flags to be placed by students on the front lawn of the school in honor of the nation’s veterans. Gradually, large flags were added until they circled the front drive. This year the Lakeside Color Guard will place 26 large American Flags around the front drive of the school, then students, faculty members and members of the community will place an American Flag on the front lawn. The Viking band will play during the placement of the flags. The ceremony will end with the playing of "Taps."
Over the years, we have been privileged to have many outstanding speakers to give the Veterans Day Address. State Senator, Bob Waldrep, was one of the first speakers. Capt. Rebecca Morgan became the first woman to address our students. One of our speakers was Mr. Johnny Caldwell, a local businessman, who served two tours of duty in Vietnam and who was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained there.
Our hope is that we may continue each year to give our students an opportunity to honor our veterans and to demonstrate their patriotism by continuing this proud tradition at Lakeside Middle School. We invite you to attend our Veterans' Day Program this year.
